The Ford Mustang Mach 1 Makes a Comeback in 2021

With its future Mach 1, the American manufacturer is resurrecting a mythical name that appeared in 1969 on the Mustang and improving the model's efficiency on the circuit. Indeed, as of this fall, the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 will have its entry ticket for the track.

Chartrand Ford in Laval, near Saint-Eustache, Boisbriand, Sainte-Thérèse, Terrebonne, Blainville and just a few minutes from Montreal, tells us this time about this strong comeback of the Mach One, a true performance car.

While the GT500 Mustang's performances are convincing and its power proven on the roads of Quebec, Canada and the United States, its efficiency on the track remains slightly limited by the versatility it must demonstrate to satisfy a wide audience. That's where the Mustang Mach 1 comes in, and without altering the GT, it offers notable transformations to improve handling and endurance in extreme conditions. Brembo braking is even more effective and Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires stick the Mustang to the road. For looks and performance, a specific spoiler and front bumper, as well as a quadruple exhaust outlet are integrated. At first glance, the Mach 1 is so distinctive and has such a sporty look that it's easy to recognize.

The first Mach 1 version of the Ford Mustang first appeared in the catalogue in 1969. The Ponycar has been a success since its launch in 1964, and the race for performance in American automobile production reached a climax at the end of the decade. The Mustang had to offer sporty versions that were always up to date to meet public demand. The facelift the model underwent in 1969 had to be complemented by a new sports version. “Mach 1”—the speed of sound—was the perfect name. Of course, it had the largest Ford engines of the time, a firmer suspension, special bodywork decorations and other details in the interior to enhance its sporty look. The Mustang Mach 1 became a legend.

Moreover, the first models of the name are a commercial success and the numerous mechanical configurations offered and the notable aesthetic modifications—without distorting the original model—make it possible to maintain extremely competitive sales prices, much lower than those of a Shelby. Rumour has it that the 2021 Mustang Mach 1 may inherit the 460 horsepower, 5.0-litre V8 engine found under the hood of the Mustang GT.

The first photos released of a camouflaged model being tested on a track suggest a few modifications such as a specific spoiler or a pair of fog lights integrated into the front grille … just like in the 1960s. In addition, one of the Mustang Mach 1's main styling features, the hood scoop, seems to have been redesigned and relocated. On previous Mach 1s, the scoop was placed in the centre of the hood. The 2021 version appears to show air scoops on the edge of the hood and another photo shows a single rear spoiler.

Presented by Ford as “the most efficient V8 Mustang on the racetrack”, the Mach 1 will not be accessible to everyone, as its production will be limited to a specific number of models.
